At Middleton Primary School we aim to help children to develop a love for Mathematics. It is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are, by necessity, organised into apparently distinct domains, but pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to Science and other subjects. The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, finding relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Teaching and Learning
In Years 1-6 we use a teaching scheme, White Rose Maths, which provided a rich and varied curriculum which supports the progression of pupils. It is crafted the help inspire a genuine love of maths and help every child master the national curriculum.
In EYFS Early Learning Goals are followed to ensure continuity and progression from the Foundation Stage through to the National Curriculum. Planning is derived from the very successful Success for All scheme which is used through the school in literacy, but used all day within EYFS. It ensures an active and exciting approach to Maths is accessed.
Across years 1-5 we put the children into ability groups, within year groups, according to their levels and needs. The groups are all taught the same curriculum but the lessons are adapted to best suit the needs of the children. Groups are regularly reviewed through half termly testing, learning walks and pupil progress meetings.
Supporting your child at home
Homework, in line with the school policy, is set by class teachers and may include online activities/worksheets from White Rose focusing on the learning the children have been accessing in school that week.
Number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurements, geometry and statistics are assessed using the statutory requirement as outlined in the National Curriculum.
White Rose assessments are used to assess and track the progress of the children throughout school to ensure that sufficient progress is made. This assessment is delivered every half term and is designed to support depth of understanding required in the New Curriculum. The data is collated and discussed at a Pupil Progress and Target setting meetings to ensure children are achieving.
